Steve Simpson

Steve has been a member of Woodland's Board since 2018, when he joined as the Sportsmanship and Technical Director and later became the President in 2020. He grew up playing recreational soccer with the Brookside Soccer Club in Springfield, Massachusetts and continues to play recreational soccer today for the Seattle Barbarians in the GSSL. Steve lives in Greenwood with his wife and two sons: He coached his older son on Woodland's "Charizards" for several years before his son moved on to Seattle United and continues to coach his younger son on Woodland's "Rocket Hamsters." Steve also maintains a USSF Referee Certification and picks up a few games every season in and around the Seattle area and at tournaments.

WhY DO YOU VOLUNTEER FOR Woodland?

Growing up playing soccer has given me a lifetime of opportunities to connect with people all over the world through pickup games and organized leagues to cheering on the pros. A strong recreational soccer program has the ability to not only teach life lessons about fairness, sportsmanship and community, but can also give that opportunity to build connections to anyone, irrespective of means or special talents.

Kevin Alkire

Kevin joined Woodland's Board in 2024 as the Head Registrar. He grew up playing recreational soccer with the Laurelhurst View Ridge (LVR) Club in Seattle and has played soccer in various official and unofficial forms into adulthood. Kevin lives in Fremont with his wife, daughter and dog, "Moose."

WhY DO YOU VOLUNTEER FOR Woodland?

I see the positive impact that soccer has on my own life and the life of my daughter, her teammates and my fellow soccer parents. I also recognize that the logistics of registration, fees and scheduling can be A LOT for for players' families to navigate. I started volunteering with WSC to make those less-fun but necessary logistics as easy as possible for our players and their families.

Currently Coach of the Wild Puppies (GU10)

What do you love about soccer?

Mary Schoen is the parent of three Woodland players and has been a board member since 2021. She is not a soccer player, but can wield a google doc spreadsheet for fall practice sign up like nobody’s business.

Mary cheers on three WSC teams: Grand Canyons, the Ninjas, and the Lightning Snakes.

What do you love about soccer?

Anybody can play, you just need a ball. You can play by yourself, with friends, or as part of a team. You can play it anywhere in the world with anyone, and you don’t have to speak the same language. It’s fun, frustrating, beautiful, ugly, exciting, heartbreaking… it’s basically life!

What do you love about soccer?

I love sports and soccer in particular because it's such an international sport and popularized for both girls and boys. I can't wait for both my son and daughter to join the club and meet life long friends and have fun playing.

Will Hays

A lifelong soccer aficionado, Will grew up playing soccer just outside Atlanta starting at the age of four. His passion for the game propelled him to play Division I soccer in college where he was captain and selected to the All Conference team. He turned down a few professional offers after school, (in 2001 the $18k salary was tempting but not quite enough to change his career path). Will continued to play recreational soccer after school, moving to Seattle in 2008. He continues to play in adult leagues today. Will lives near Green Lake with his wife and 3 children. He shares his love of the game with the next generation of players by coaching his son's U8 and daughter's U6 Woodland teams.

Volunteering his time with the Woodland club is just one way of giving back to the sport that has enriched his life with countless friendships and unforgettable memories
