Officiating Overview

Our games are officiated by volunteers (parents & siblings), club referees or city association referees, depending on the age division.

WSC wants to improve the playing environment for our youth players to enhance both player and character development. Our club aims to change the climate of youth soccer and elevate our conduct as players, coaches, spectators, and referees to a higher level. Find out more about Respect, Fair Play & Conduct at our club.

WHAT IF YOUR GAME HAS NO ASSIGNED REFEREE?

If a referee from WSC or another club is not provided for your game, identify a willing and capable volunteer, such as a parent or older youth, for this task (It is recommended that the coaches do not referee their own games). This allows the coach to focus on coaching.

Volunteer Referee (U06/U07)

Refereeing Mod games is not difficult. It is suggested that the coach does not referee their own games. If a U9 Mod Referee is not provided for your game, it is important to grab a volunteer for this task. This allows the coach to focus on coaching. A volunteer can be a parent or an older teenage kid; and no certification is required.

Club “Mod” Referee (U08/U09)

In 2013 the club established a program to give 11-13 year olds an opportunity to learn how to officiate U08 & U09 home games and get paid for it during the fall seasn. The games for these two age groups are interclub (against Ballard, Queen Anne, & Lake City club teams), where each club is responsible for providing trained/mentored referees to officiate games conducted on their home fields. The unique program serves to develop leadership skills and personal responsibility through “a real job” where accountability (showing up for games) and maturity (interacting with coaches and players is required. A short (and required) training held in early September for those interested in being eligible to officiate U08 & U09 games.

Our goal is to see kids continue to officiate U10+ games and advance their referee training and credentials through the formal training from the Seattle Soccer Referee Association (SSRA), which assigns officials to various leagues and tournaments that operate with the Seattle area year-round, including to those organized by the SYSA.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A CLUB “MOD” REFEREE?

If you are interested in participating in the WSC Referee program, please contact the Referee Development Coordinator. Participants must be middle school age and a registered player with Woodland Soccer Club or another SYSA club.
